HALF TERM SNOW REPORT AND WHERE TO SKI WITH YOUR FAMILY

SNOW REPORT FOR HALF TERM AND A  3 VALLEYS PISTE GUIDE FOR THE FAMILY

The 3 Valleys continues to just keep on giving this season, along with an incredible amount of snowfall, we also have an action packed schedule to keep families entertained during the February Half Term Holidays.

The best thing about holidaying in Meribel and La Tania during February half term is how good the lift systems are. Shorter queues and less delays resulting in longer time out playing on the slopes.

Alpine Action are a family run company, we understand that family ski holidays are some of the most special times you can spend together. Simply bonding over a sport you are passionate about, outdoors in the fresh mountain air, spectacular views and beautiful surrounds.

This week we have a lot of youngsters out on their first Family skiing holiday, below is a little information for parents thinking about taking their children skiing for the first time.

Where to ski with your family

There are 4 fantastic places to take your children both in Meribel and La Tania,  if they are beginner skiers. The first is Meribel Mottaret, this area of the Meribel Valley had a makeover last season and has a new learner area designed with children in mind.

There are 2 free magic carpets to get you started, the first a very gentle area behind the Plattieres lift station, this is great for getting the feel of skiing and being out of the way of speedy more advanced skiers and boarders. There is also a longer, slightly steeper piste next to the Combes chair lift, this allows progression once the beginner starts to make a little progress later in the day.

Next Step, once you have mastered the magic carpets you can take your first chair lift up “Combes” this will take you to another learner area with tunnels, obstacles to practise turning and give you more of a sensation of being “on the mountain”.

Second there is Meribel Altiport, take the Altiport C bus up or use a ski pass and take the Rhodos bubble from La Chaudanne.  Beautiful scenery, surrounded by trees and if you are lucky wildlife.

There is an Inuit village at the top of the Free Altiport drag lift that enables you to have some rest and play time when the children tire. There is also some husky dogs for children to pet and play with.

Good to know for parents: There are toilets located, inside the tourism office at the bottom of the magic carpet in Meribel Mottaret and at the bottom of the Altiport drag lift. There are also multiple cafes and restaurants surrounding these areas for much needed breaks.

La Tania, has a free drag/button lift called Trokia, this is great for your first day skiing as a family with littles ones. It is a gentle slope out of the way of speedy skiers and has a few cafe/rest stop options at the bottom including a small children’s outdoor playground.

Finally we have the Courchevel Verdons and Jardin Alpin areas. These are great beginner green runs with bubble lifts going over the top and nice long, wide, cruising pistes for children to progress and take their time. Sandwiched in between is the Courchevel Family Park, which even has an airbag and inflatable donuts with a slide.

Weather & Snow Forecast

The weather Gods just keep on giving! This weekend, we have seen more snowfall kindly topping up the pistes just in time for the start of February half term holidays. Today we are forecast for sunshine all day with clouds re-forming late in the afternoon and light snow showers.

On Wednesday, we are predicted light snow showers in the morning, followed by sunshine in the afternoon and similar conditions into the end of the week. With a maximum of 11cm falling over the week in total. Wind chill is brrrrrr… freezing with lows of -18 on Tuesday and Wednesday. Sunrise is from around 07:30am each morning and sun set around 18:00pm.

WEEKLY SNOW REPORT AND EVENTS IN THE 3 VALLEYS 22/01/2018

Snow report and piste guide for the 3 Valleys

Bonjour a tous! Reporting to you live from Meribel and La Tania, the Alpine Action Resort Team are back with your  Weekly Snow Report and Events in the heart of the 3 Valleys. The snow Gods have answered our prayers and this Winter 2017/18 has seen more snowfall in the past month and a half than it did the whole of last Season! Approximately 3 meters of snow has fallen, leaving us with a solid 2 meter base and regular dustings on top. This week we are forecast for another 30cm of fresh snow.

The 3 Valleys mountain teams have been working extremely hard to ensure our pistes are safe and secured so we can have all the fun playing in the POWDER. The mountain has become a playground for all, with Liberty Free Ride areas being secured for the skiing adventurer wanting a bit of Alpine Action, by trying out some off piste terrain in a secured area. Main pistes have been groomed to perfection – this weekly our absolute favourite run is the NEW Jeruselum piste dropping from Meribel into Saint Martin.

Winding and rolling all the way from the top of Saint Martin Express 2, to the centre of Saint Martin village, this run is an absolute dream and accessible for intermediate – advanced skiers – it is certainly the best run we have skied this season!

If you fancy trying out some off piste terrain in a secured location our Liberty Ride area (highlighted in yellow on your 3 Valleys piste map) of the week is… Tetras.

Tetras: Located in Courchevel 1650, this run used to be a groomed piste but is now home to an ungroomed monitored Free Ride area. Shooting down under the Chapelets lift in Courchevel 1650 this run has a mixed terrain with side hits, moguls, untouched powder and short but steep descents.

Weather forecast

This week we have already seen heavy snowfall since Saturday with approximately 15cm falling until this evening. Tomorrow (Tuesday) the clouds will clear and sunshine is forecast for the next 2 days. On Thursday evening the clouds will re-form and a further 27cm of snow is forecast to fall over night and into Friday. Next week we are currently forecast for sunshine all week!

The Meribel Valley currently has a reading of 125cm of snow at resort level (1450m) and 330m at Altitude (2700m).

The Courchevel Valley currently has a reading of 207cm at resort level (1800m) and 290cm at Altitude (2700m)

Avalanche risk is 5 out of 5 – do not go off piste

The Alpine Bake Off: Apple and Almond cake

As the season comes to an end we really are going to miss our Chalet cakes. There is nothing better than coming back from a day on the mountain to the smell of baking. A long standing Alpine Action favourite is our “Apple and Almond” cake. This mouth watering goodness has a crisp outside and soft spongy middle. It lasts for ages if stored in a cake tin and if you like it as much as we do, you can even heat it up and serve it with a little cream for dessert.

Weekly Snow Report and Events in the 3 Valleys

It is sad to say this is the final weekly snow report and events for Alpine Action Winter Ski Season 2016/17. The 3 Valleys teams have really worked their magic this season ensuring it is the BEST ski area in Europe. Their commitment to having more lifts and runs open than any other resort has delivered and even as we approach the end of very warm and sunny Spring like conditions, they continue to ensure we can access the best snow high up the mountain.

New additions to the 3 Valleys have made it not only the best place to ski but the best place to be!

Some of the more noticeable highlights have been; luxury picnic areas, wifi hot spots, selfie spots with the most amazing back drops, increased liberty free ride areas (allowing you a taste of off-piste skiing in a safe controlled area), amazing Snow park set ups attracting world famous freestyle Olympians and teams. Events such as; the Aerosnow show in Meribel, the Alpine Skiing Europa Cup, torch lit decent’s by local ski schools during school holidays, mega firework displays in Courchevel, ice car racing in Val Thorens, the piste bash festival in Meribel (music and comedy in the mountains) and Champagne Yoga brunches at La Folie Douce. If that wasn’t enough after being released back into the Alps over 10 years ago we are finally starting to see signs of European wolves living free in their natural habitat.

The season isn’t over yet, the next two weeks see skiing in Spring-like conditions, long lunches at sunny mountain restaurants and the annual Meribel Village Charity Day party. Head down to Meirbel Village on Wednesday afternoon and see an incredible line up of local and guest bands/DJ’s playing, hosted by Radio 1’s Jo Whiley.

The weather forecast this week is mainly sunny with some clouds today and Wednesday morning. The forecast for next week, will start of bright and sunny with some light snow showers Monday to Thursday with sunshine for the remainder of the week.

All 3 Valley links will remain open and the majority of pistes. Routes down to Meribel centre will be shut, but lifts will remain open to allow you access back down to the main lift area “La Chaudanne”. For lift and run openings check out this link and scroll down, to see live information: http://www.meribel.net/infos-pistes.html

Temperatures are staying mild with highs of 14 degrees and lows of 1 degree. The coldest wind chill is forecast at -3, freezing level is at 2700m for perfectly groomed pistes first thing in the morning!

Weekly Snow Report and Events in the 3 Valleys

As the final week of the season gets nearer, the resort is winding down for a little “you time”, from the 1st of April to the 14th, Meribel is focusing on being “Zen” and what a way to do it…

“Zen Altitude” is a two week event in Meribel that you can get involved with. Think piste nap time, mountain Yoga, leisurely lunches, girl power freestyle days with local ski schools and Spa’s for relaxation and pampering with a mountain back drop. Anyone coming to resort this week and next, can get involved just sign up to any the activities scheduled in the “Zen Altitude” itinerary.

If you are less Zen and more adrenaline junkie there is still lots to do, snow conditions may appear Spring-like with lower slopes naturally fading as a result of warm temperatures, but above 1800m the snow conditions are still great! Pistes are quiet and sunshine is forecast nearly every day for the next week.  This is also prime-time for paraponting in the Alps. Light snow showers are expected  for Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday daytime. Sunshine for the rest of the week followed by more snow showers Monday to Wednesday next week.

Temperatures have slightly dropped this week with highs of 6 degrees and lows of – 2 degrees. The coldest wind chill is forecast at -5 allowing for the snow to re-freeze overnight for perfectly groomed pistes first thing in the morning!

Weekly Snow Report and Events in the 3 Valleys

Happy Monday from a Winter paradise in Meribel and La Tania! The snow just keeps on coming in the 3 Valleys and we are ecstatic. Heavy snowfall has been non-stop since last night and is forecast to continue well into Tuesday. The skiing footage on this weeks video report was taken on Sunday (5th March) between 11am-1:30pm… O how the weather has changed! Nearly half a meter of snow has fallen and who can blame us for feeling like children on Christmas morning!

Snow and weather breakdown

The weather forecast is looking fabulous with heavy snow today and tomorrow. The sun will be beaming down Wednesday through to Friday, followed by snow again early next week and sunshine towards the end of the week.

The Alpine Bake Off: PANCAKE DAY!

Pancake day is one of those traditions that stays with you from being a child. Stood in your parents or grandparents kitchen, being assisted in flipping a pancake ever so carefully, ensuring it doesn’t end up on the ceiling or floor. Everyone has their own ideas about what is the best way to make the mix (butter or oil) and what is the best way to flip it (straight flip or slightly tilt the pan). Then there is the sibling rivalry, who will have the first pancake, who will eat the most pancakes, one of our staff said she ate 14 in a row!

Here at Alpine Action we have combined an old Chalet recipe with our Chalet Manager’s mum – Anne Rowe’s pancake recipe and methods… enjoy, HAPPY PANCAKE DAY!

Pancakes

Makes 12

4oz (100g) plain flour
pinch of salt
1 egg
1 tablespoon of melted butter
1/2 pint of milk (300ml)

1. Sift the flour and salt into a mixing bowl and make a well in the centre.

2. Crack the egg into the well, add the melted butter and half of the milk.

3. Fold the flour into the liquid using a wooden spoon, continue until all the flour has been mixed and beat well to make a smooth batter.

4.  Stir in the remaining milk bit by bit.

5. Pre-heat a non-stick frying pan or pancake pan and grease with butter – use a piece of kitchen roll to absorb any excess grease.

6. Add half a ladle or 2 table spoons of the batter and swirl it around the pan immediately, coating the entire base.

7. Poke around the edges with a spatula to ensure it isn’t sticking to the sides of the pan. When the pancake is lightly browned, it’s time to flip!

8. Tilt the pan away from you and shuffle the pancake so a little bit of the edge is hanging out of the pan, with your wrist flick the pan up and catch your pancake.

9. Brown the other side, then transfer to a warm plate.

10. Toppings: traditionally you squeeze lemon juice and sugar all over the pancake and role it up. Other Alpine Action recommendations are; Orange slices squeezed with sugar, maple syrup, honey, Nutella and Speculous spread!

Bon Appetit!
