My letter to the producers of The Jump

Dear Producers of The Jump,

My name is Jim and I wondered if I could could enter your competition next year? It looks like everyone has a great time and I think I would too.

I have some experience in snow sports, which I understand from watching your program isn’t essential but I thought I should let you know. I have done 5 winter ski seasons and feel that I am competent skier and snowboarder. I have also tried snowblading but it wasn’t very enjoyable. What I have in experience I lack in celebrity status, however, based on this years contestants I think we could be able to work something out.

Below I have compiled any links to fame that I have. I really hope that one of these might be enough for you to consider me as a contestant.

  1. I have met Tony Hart and he autographed a drawing of a duck that I had drawn in pastel. I think I was aged 6.
  2. I was reluctant to mention this but I have met Mr Bell on a few occasions, although I am sure he doesn’t remember and I would rather get in on my own merit rather than through association. Although if you were to push me for a few stand out memories of Graham then I would probably say that the two that stand out would be the time I shared a taxi with him on halloween, I was wearing a childrens skeleton outfit, aged 4-5 years, I was 28. I also have had the privilege to commentate on Graham’s record breaking ride on the rodeo bull at the London Ski Show.
  3. My dad claims to have had a pint with Chas and Dave.
  4. When on a ski trip to Les Arcs I witnessed Clare Balding play pool.
  5. During my time as a recruitment consultant for I employed a person to work in Richard Branson’s ski chalet. She subsequently went on to accidently see him naked.
  6. Dermot O’leary has been given my autograph. Admittedly he didn’t ask for it but I gave it to him anyway. I was quite young and a bit drunk.
  7. Previous television experience. Appeared on BBC Spotlight for a feature on math in Devon schools.
  8. I have been to the recording of a couple of television and radio show that have famouse people in them and I have also been to the theater to see plays with famous people in.
  9. I have served the Mayor of Warwick a pint.
  10. There are a few people that I went to school with and have since lost touch who work in the media. Would that help? I think one person may even work at Channel 4.
  11. I am the author of the second most read The Jump live blog.

If you feel that there is scope for me to be picked as a contestant then please do not hesitate to contact me. I would happily work in exchange for accommodation, food and a lift pass.

Kind Regards

Jim Duncombe

3 Valleys Snow Report – 9th February 2015

IMG_08723 Valleys Snow Report – 9th February 2015

What a week we have had out here in the 3 Valleys it has snowed so much over the last weekend that we nearly lost our snow-o-meter! Since then the temperatures have been really cold which means the snow has stayed and turned the whole area in to a winter haven.

The pistes are in a really good condition with some soft snow on top of the mountain and a really good base layer which makes for great skiing. The weather is set to stay cold for the next week but with plenty of sunshine and even possible snow showers towards the end of the week heading into the weekend.

The on piste skiing should be near on perfect this week with the clear blue sky’s and freshly bashed pistes. If your out here this week don’t forget to put your sun tan cream or you could be going home with a nice goggle tan!

We are really enjoying the season so far and we are only half way though! We have had lots of fantastic guest staying with us and we can’t wait to meet some more. If you haven’t booked yet and are thinking of a ski holiday come out and see us here in Meribel and La Tania, we still have space’s in our chalets for March and April so come and join us after the February rush.

Here at Alpine Action we were big fans of Channel 4’s The Jump in 2014. So we were very excited to learn that is was returning in 2015. It still has yet to have a confirmed transmission date, but we do know it will be very soon as there has been teasers released and the participants, or celebrities if you prefer, have been in training for a month or two.

The Premise

If you didn’t watch it last year here is a quick summary of the show. A group of celebrities take part in a selection of snow sports, that range from slalom to bobsled over the period of a week. The show goes out daily, making it a very tough week for our live blogger, Jim. Each day the worst performing pair of Celebrities are offered up to a public vote and have to go of a ski jump on live TV for a chance to injure themselves, or stay in the show. Oh and it is hosted by Davina Mccall and has every big name winter sport competitor the UK has produced, from the new snow queen Jenny Jones to the old guard of Eddie the Eagle, with the obligatory Graham Bell appearance too. We did suggest that the show could be improved by moving to Meribel but clearly no one listens to us.

What can you expect

Based on last year and this year so far, you can expect lots of injured Celebrities. Last year the competition was won by Joe McElderry who was the Stand-in’s, Stand-in. This year so far the show has claimed the knee of Ola Jordan and the ribs of Sally Bercow. You can also expect the desire to want to take part in most of the shows apart from the ski jumping as well as a feeling of jealousy as everyone taking part look like they are have a great time.

Who is in it

Prepare to be underwhelmed, confused and disappointed at the star quality of the Celebrity participants. Which is understandable as based on the risk involved and the injury rate last year you need to be pretty certain that you have a clear schedule for the next few months. Here are the names, which I have divided up into two categories those that I have heard of and those that I haven’t. Have – Heather Mills, Jodie Kidd, Steve-O, Stacey Solomon, Phil Tufnell. Haven’t – Louise Thompson,Mike Tindall,Ashley Roberts, Jack Ass star Steve-O, socialite Lady Victoria Hervey, JB Gill, Jon-Allan Butterworth, Chloe Madeley, Louie Spence, Dom Parker, Louise Hazel and Joey Essex. Ok so when I say I haven’t heard of Louie Spence I mean pretending I haven’t for my own sanity. For now shall not pass on any further judgment of the contestants as I will save that for our Live Blog of the series.

When is it on

As we said we don’t really know but it will happen soon, maybe they are waiting for that next big dump of snow like the rest of us.

Alpine Action Winter Olympics Coverage – Day 5

Alpine Action Winter Olympics Coverage – Day 5

Today has been the first day I have been away from the TV and the Winter Olympics since it started seven days ago. It seems I missed a lot. Fortunately the wonderful BBC helped me keep in touch.

The first thing I missed out on was finding out how far down the order in the Women Downhill competition Chemmy would finish. I know this sounds negative, and it is, but we all knew she wasn’t going to win. She does deserve a huge amount of praise though. She wasn’t that far off the pace and had I been competing I would still be adjusting my boots by the time she had finished. In complete fairness, in the time the whole competition took place, I would probably be still having that pretend break, you know the one where you pretend you are just waiting for the slower people in your group and really your legs are ruined. Also Chemmy worked hard to funded her “journey” to the Olympics and battled setbacks that would make you or me think twice about booking our next ski holiday. She deserve to be there competing and she looked like she thoroughly enjoyed herself.

While we are talking about people enjoying themselves, I do wish Clair Balding would stop doing whatever the equivalent is of namedropping the watching of events. Let’s call it eventdropping. Every day she happens to eventdropp the event she has had the fortune to go watch live that day. It is making me very jealous.

Due to the lack of TV today I had to, like most people, watch the 7pm highlights. However I did keep up to date with events via the wireless, specifically 5live. Now I enjoy the Winter Olympics, I watch the X-Games on live streaming and will read endless articles about winter sport but I don’t keep up with developments in the world of Curling. That does not stop me enjoying it every four years. Today as I listened to the radio, I did wonder what people who had no idea what the sport entails were picturing as the sport was broadcast as it features lots of people with Scottish names hurling rocks. For the record my heart sank when Eve missed that last shot on the 10th end. Still the boys did well despite their odd sailor’s outfits.
