Where to watch skiing and snowboarding on TV

If you find your time away from the slopes too long, then you might want to know where you can watch skiing and snowboarding on the TV.

What’s the longest you can go without thinking about skiing? If you are like us, it might not be very long.

So in the long months between spring and winter, we have to get our fix online and on TV.

Here are some of the best places to find and watch skiing and snowboarding on TV and online.

Skiing and Snowboarding on Netflix

If you have a Netflix subscription, you probably won’t find your ski fix here but can get a small dose of alpine life watching the documentary Mountains. There are some feel-good ski based movies to watch such as Chalet Girl and Eddie the Eagle.

There is also The Chalet a revenge thriller where a group of friends head to a chalet in the French Alps for a wedding, or there is The Frozen Dead a police crime investigation mystery based in the Pyrenees.

Skiing and Snowboarding on Amazon Prime

Prime subscribers have a wider selection of more traditional ski and snowboard movies that feature actual skiing and snowboarding. For the race fan, there is the documentary Streif about putting on the classic Hahnenkamm race in Kitzbuhel.

Other ski films include White Wedding, Antagonist, Gunni Season and Japow.

For snowboarders, there is a little less to watch on Amazon Prime with just Yugen and Travis Rices’ Roadless of note. However, there is MXP: Most Xtreme Primate a film about a snowboarding chimpanzee and few episodes of Paw Patrol that feature the pups boarding.

Skiing and Snowboarding on Redbull TV

For anyone looking for a serious does of incredible skiing and snowboarding movies and TV shows look no further than the free online and digital channel from the energy drink company.

This is the media house that brought the world the game-changing Art of Flight, also on the channel are all of Rices’ other movies including The Fourth Phase.

There are load of ski films on there too, as well as live streams and replays of events like the Kings and Queens of Corbets. Dig deeper and find athlete session and behind the scene clips. There is also a documentary about an alpine search and rescue team called The Horn.

What’s new in the Three Valleys 2019/20

Discover what is new in the 3 Valleys this winter – Season 2019/20

Every year the resorts across the Three Valleys bring new upgrades to their ski areas, resorts and event offerings.

The 2019/20 winter season is no different with new runs, lifts and entertainment.

New runs in the Three Valleys

Meribel is opening two new red runs open in the Roc de Fer area at the top of the Olympic chairlift.

Up until now, this area has been served by blue slopes and the notorious black fun Face. The new runs will be called Gypaete and Daguet which can also be accessed from the Cherferie lift.

New ski zones in the Three Valleys

As more and more of us want freeride to be easier to access and safer Courchevel and Meribel are introducing such zones.

Meribel is upgrading its “Back to the Wild” freeride zone that can be found on the north-facing Mont de la Challe sector. Skiiers can access area that is area via the Roc de Tougne chair.

Courchevel is revamping the Creux Noirs area that was closed for the 2018/19 season.

It will reopen as an ungroomed controlled freeride area under the name The Freeride Lab and will be accessed by a new 350m drag lift that replaces the very dated chairlift.

Starting at the 2700m peak will be two red runs and one black run, but it also means better access to some of the areas best off-piste. This is a welcome return.

New Ski lifts in the Three Valleys.

In addition to the new Creux Noirs new drag lift Courchevel are making it easier for skiers to commute from Le Praz.

A new €27 million lift will depart from Le Praz and arrive directly into La Croisette complex in Courchevel centre. This will make it easier for skiers to get to the Plantrey chairlift, the slopes and the resort

The base of the lift will also feature a multi-use centre that includes parking and a children’s activity zone.

St Martin de Belleville is upgrading Saint Martin 1 gondola that is the main lift out of the village.

It will replace all the old cabins and increase lift speed further, and capacity will rise from 1,800 to 2,400 people per hour.

More snowmaking in Meribel

To serve the growing army of snowmaking machines that keep the ski slopes white more water is needed.

Meribel has expanded two reservoirs to help increase snowmaking on the Bouvreuil Rouge, Mûres Rouge, sections of Combe du Vallon, Choucas.

New for Families in the Three Valleys

The Yeti park in Meribel-Mottaret has introduced a no skis area so children can run around, play blow Himilyan horns, have a snack and chill out.

And in the Family Cool area near the Meribel Altiport, there will be a load of free entertainment during the school holidays.

Activities will include eagle shows, ice carving, biathlon taster sessions and other surprises.

More picnic areas in the Three Valleys

After the success of the log cabin picnic spot, Cabane des Trappeurs, Meribel are introducing the Refuge at the bottom of the Lagopède piste.

Its worth remembering that the Cabane des Trappeurs doesn’t just provide seating there is also glove-warmers and smartphone chargers.

New Bars in the Three Valleys

Val Thorens is opening a new Igloo village that will be home to an ice bar for drinks and a restaurant serving mountain classics like fondue.

Meribel welcomed the return of the popular Jacks bar. It’s absence last winter was noticed by all.

This winter it will open in a new home across the road from the Chaudanne in the building that previously housed the Meribar.

What’s On in Méribel for 2018/2019

Our guide to what’s across the 3 Valleys in 2018/2019.

We’ve already put together a rundown of what’s new in Méribel for 2018/19 and with the season fast approaching, anticipation and general excitement is now reaching its annual fever pitch!

The Three Valleys is more than just the largest linked ski area in the world and as always, there are lots of events taking place throughout the season that you won’t want to miss if you can help it.

We’ve put together a few dates for your diary for the 2018 / 2019 season in Méribel and The Three Valleys.

whats on meribel

Ski Area opening day. Snow cover permitting, the Three Valleys ski area is scheduled to open from 8th December, so expect a huge buzz with lots of smiling faces and eager lift-goers jostling for space on the newly opened slopes.

The Audi FIS Ski World Cup takes place over in Courchevel over a full weekend, 21st-22nd December. Many champions take part, all keen to become the next Mikaela Shiffrin (USA), who won last year’s competition ahead of Tessa Worley (France) and Manuela Moelgg (Italy).

Also in December, catch the inaugural, Meribel stage of the Ladies Night Tour. An International women’s Alpine tour, the dual slalom event takes place at night which really ups the atmospheric stakes and is the best place to catch up with the female French skiers at the top of their game.

See in 2019 in style with the New Year celebrations, Meribel style. Expect fireworks and champagne corks and some great parties at a whole host of clubs and bars such as the Folie Douce, The Rond Point, O’Sullivans and Jacks. Be sure to check their websites beforehand as some bars and clubs are ticketed on NYE.

NYE Meribel

In January, catch The French Slopestyle Cup, held in the DC Area 43 Terrain Park. See top athletes performing simply extraordinary jumps and tricks in this spectacular competition, guaranteed ‘ohs’ and ‘ahs’ as standard.

Kicking off on the 14th and then throughout February and March, join upwards of 8,000 spectators to witness some of the most amazing firework displays you’re ever likely to see, at the International Fireworks Festival in Courchevel.

March is all about Music and sees the return of The Ronnie Loves Music Festival. Back for its seventh consecutive year, the week-long family friendly festival features top name events and a Big Air contest, all in one of the Alps’ top Apres Ski venues.

It’s also the month of Méribel’s Piste Bash Festival, featuring skiing, live music, DJs and comedy in the heart of the Three Valleys.

As April arrives and we start to think about the season’s end, there’s still time for the Three Valleys Enduro event which sees teams of pros, amateurs and families compete in some great challenges and events such as the Giant Slalom and Skicross.

Also in April is the Annual Three Valleys Charity Day, held in Meribel Village. The event is a firm favourite and has been running for more than 15 years now. The lineup this year includes hip-hop DJ Jaguar and perennial partiers, the Dub Pistols.

Unless you’re lucky enough to be spending the whole season in Méribel, chances are you’ll only be able to catch one or two of the events we’ve highlighted here. Handily, we’ve also got a Meribel Bucket List guide, which is all perfectly doable, even if you have just the one week in Meribel and The Three Valleys.

What’s on at this years London Ski show 2018

Find out what is on at this year’s Ski Show 2018

The London Ski Show has been going for 45 years. The last few have seen some massive changes as it moved to a Battersea Park and is now called the Ski and Snowboard Festival.

There is more than before to see and do and the outside space that hosts the big kicker (Mount Battersea) and aprés stage is the best part of the whole show.

Below is our guide to what to see and what is new…

p1010046

The Facts

Dates: Thursday 25th October to Sunday 28th October (times vary)
Location: Battersea Evolution in Battersea Park
Price: Early Bird – £15 Full £25 Concessions £10 – Children £8 – Under 11’s Free
Website: skiandsnowboard.co.uk

What’s on at the Ski Show

Skiing and Snowboarding

There is more skiing and snowboarding to watch than ever before which is good as that is what the show is all about.

Mount Battersea is back with its pro riders hitting a real snow kicker pulling off some massive tricks. Expect to see some of our Olympic stars like Murray Buchan taking part in the pro rider demo alongside some emerging talent as well as Q & A’s with the stars of Team GB.

The Ski Club of Great Britain will be making the most of the real snow at the foot of Mount Battersea by offering avalanche training sessions before the big air starts.

If you fancy a bit of skiing yourself then there will be an artificial rolling ski slope for you to develop your skills on. Numbers are limited for this but you can book your place online prior to the event.
p1000419

Kids & Family

As the show is held during half term this year the organisers are making sure there is a tonne of things for kids to get involved in which will mean that you can spend a whole day there.

During the day there is entertainment in The Lodge area with children’s entertainers Tootles & Nibs that includes winter sports-themed games and activities, winter selfie station, arts & crafts and face painting.

There is also ice skating and rock climbing also available as part of the ticket price.

p1000444

Entertainment

Husky sledging is a new activity at this year’s festival for you to try, details are slim but we guess it will be a sleigh on wheels being towed by the dog around the site.

The show is also introducing a vintage Ferris wheel to the fun. From the top, you will get great views of the park and the Thames.

And the Apres is being ramped up with a headline set from Sunset Sons on Saturday night.

Exhibitors

The truth is that the show wouldn’t exist without the “trade show” element and for many people the chance to shop for all things ski related in one place is the reason they attend.

As well as that you can expect the usual mix of small and large tour operators, retailers such as Ellis Brigham and Finches Emporium, gap year opportunities like our friends Basecamp ski instructor courses, representatives from ski areas like the Three Valleys,

Naturally, there will be oodles of clothing and equipment for sale as well as the obligatory novelty helmet stand.

p1000414

Food

Since moving from Earls Court the food on offer is mountains better than in previous years with some of the street food being surprisingly tasty and at quite reasonable prices. It could be your first chance of the winter to get some tartiflette.

p1000438

Free Stuff

Don’t miss out on all the free stuff. Get it right and you could restock your stationery cupboard, bag some new sunglasses & get enough sweets to cover the trick or treaters over Halloween.

HALF TERM SNOW REPORT AND WHERE TO SKI WITH YOUR FAMILY

SNOW REPORT FOR HALF TERM AND A  3 VALLEYS PISTE GUIDE FOR THE FAMILY

The 3 Valleys continues to just keep on giving this season, along with an incredible amount of snowfall, we also have an action packed schedule to keep families entertained during the February Half Term Holidays.

The best thing about holidaying in Meribel and La Tania during February half term is how good the lift systems are. Shorter queues and less delays resulting in longer time out playing on the slopes.

Alpine Action are a family run company, we understand that family ski holidays are some of the most special times you can spend together. Simply bonding over a sport you are passionate about, outdoors in the fresh mountain air, spectacular views and beautiful surrounds.

This week we have a lot of youngsters out on their first Family skiing holiday, below is a little information for parents thinking about taking their children skiing for the first time.

Where to ski with your family

There are 4 fantastic places to take your children both in Meribel and La Tania,  if they are beginner skiers. The first is Meribel Mottaret, this area of the Meribel Valley had a makeover last season and has a new learner area designed with children in mind.

There are 2 free magic carpets to get you started, the first a very gentle area behind the Plattieres lift station, this is great for getting the feel of skiing and being out of the way of speedy more advanced skiers and boarders. There is also a longer, slightly steeper piste next to the Combes chair lift, this allows progression once the beginner starts to make a little progress later in the day.

Next Step, once you have mastered the magic carpets you can take your first chair lift up “Combes” this will take you to another learner area with tunnels, obstacles to practise turning and give you more of a sensation of being “on the mountain”.

Second there is Meribel Altiport, take the Altiport C bus up or use a ski pass and take the Rhodos bubble from La Chaudanne.  Beautiful scenery, surrounded by trees and if you are lucky wildlife.

There is an Inuit village at the top of the Free Altiport drag lift that enables you to have some rest and play time when the children tire. There is also some husky dogs for children to pet and play with.

Good to know for parents: There are toilets located, inside the tourism office at the bottom of the magic carpet in Meribel Mottaret and at the bottom of the Altiport drag lift. There are also multiple cafes and restaurants surrounding these areas for much needed breaks.

La Tania, has a free drag/button lift called Trokia, this is great for your first day skiing as a family with littles ones. It is a gentle slope out of the way of speedy skiers and has a few cafe/rest stop options at the bottom including a small children’s outdoor playground.

Finally we have the Courchevel Verdons and Jardin Alpin areas. These are great beginner green runs with bubble lifts going over the top and nice long, wide, cruising pistes for children to progress and take their time. Sandwiched in between is the Courchevel Family Park, which even has an airbag and inflatable donuts with a slide.

Weather & Snow Forecast

The weather Gods just keep on giving! This weekend, we have seen more snowfall kindly topping up the pistes just in time for the start of February half term holidays. Today we are forecast for sunshine all day with clouds re-forming late in the afternoon and light snow showers.

On Wednesday, we are predicted light snow showers in the morning, followed by sunshine in the afternoon and similar conditions into the end of the week. With a maximum of 11cm falling over the week in total. Wind chill is brrrrrr… freezing with lows of -18 on Tuesday and Wednesday. Sunrise is from around 07:30am each morning and sun set around 18:00pm.

The Meribel Valley currently has a reading of 105cm of snow at resort level (1450m) and 288cm at Altitude (2700m).

The NEW Elements Park at the top of the Plan de l’homme chair lift, is also starting to take shape and we are awaiting the opening.

Woodland Walks: Teppes Trail – La Tania

The beautiful thing about the 3 Valleys is there’s something for everyone. If you aren’t a skier/boarder or your body won’t allow the aches and pains that come with the sport, there is still so much to do. If  you love the mountains; scenery, crisp air, breath taking views and fabulous lunch spots, you can still experience this at a slower pace. There are some stunning walks around Meribel and La Tania to keep you more than entertained.

One of our hosts Adrian from Chalet Cote Coeur has been out of action due to injury. He and his partner Gemma decided to adventure around the local landscape and see what La Tania walking trails have to offer. We interviewed them to find out more, here is their account of the Teppes Trail a beautiful, snowy, woodland walk:

Teppes Trail, La Tania with Adrian and Gemma from Chalet Cote Coeur

Walking Trails: La Tania – CLICK PICTURE FOR FULL MAP

Starting out at the bottom of the Grand Bois lift, cross the bridge to the centre of the resort. Take a left towards the shops and walk up the steps between the Saucisse Savoyarde deli and and the Ski Lodge. Turn left at the top and follow the road for about 20 meters, then take a right up the steps leading to the Saboia residence. The top of these steps is the beginning of the Teppes trail. Follow the footpath through the woodland and enjoy your adventure!

Adrian and Gemma…What was your favourite part about the Teppes trail?
When the trail went through the woods off the main track up to the picnic spot.

Those views!

Would you say this is an easy walk? If not what ability do you think suits this kind of walk?
Yes I would say it was easy, Adrian managed to do it with a broken collarbone.

What attire would you recommend for the trail? For example: snow shoes, normal shoes, poles etc…                   We went in our snow boots, wore thermals, ski jackets and took ski poles.

Are there any lunch/refreshment stops on the way?
There is a picnic spot at the top of the trail with benches and a lovely view.

How long did the walk take you?
It took us an hour to do the walk

Did you see any wildlife or interesting plants during your walk?
We didn’t see any animals but we did see lots of animal tracks and there was an information board at the picnic spot telling you about the wildlife and plants.

Would you say that La Tania is an easy access resort for non-skiers?
Yes I would there are many walks that you can do in the woods and up the mountains so there is a lot of variety and there are many snow shoe walks in Le Praz that we want to do as well.

Moving onto next week, we have highs of + 8 degrees and lows of – 9, so warming up slightly towards the end of the month.
